The Rotating Thin Film Oven Asphalt Aging Test is an essential component of the Superpave PG grading test and is used to simulate the asphalt aging process throughout its lifecycle in road construction and service. This process consists of three main stages:
Unaged stage – Transportation, storage, and handling
Short-term aging stage – Mixing and construction
Long-term aging stage – The entire service period
The Rotating Thin Film Aging Test is specifically designed to replicate the short-term aging stage, during which asphalt is mixed in the presence of air, combined with aggregate to form a mixture, spread, and compacted. This process is simulated primarily through rotation and forced ventilation.
During the development of this method, the test temperature was set at 163°C to align with the requirements of hot-mix asphalt technology. However, in recent years, two key factors have influenced temperature adjustments:
The increasing use of modified materials, such as epoxy asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt, which require higher mixing temperatures.
The global push for reduced carbon emissions, promoting warm-mix and cold-mix technologies, which aim to lower mixing temperatures.
To meet these new market demands, the latest Rotating Thin Film Oven is designed with a temperature control range of room temperature to 200°C, ensuring adaptability for various testing requirements.
In addition to the main unit, the new Rotating Thin Film Oven comes equipped with:
